Exercise: Focal Length and Angle of View

Here I have chosen the gates as my object, and have marked a point on the ground so as to stay in position.
Holding the camera to my eye, and looking through the viewfinder, and at the gates at the same time, I move the lens until both images are equal.  The focal length marking on my lens is 55mm.

I have used two lenses, 18-55mm and 70-300mm.

I have taken a selection of five pictures in all.  The first one taken at 55mm - as the eye can see it - Then I fitted the zoom lens and took a picture at 300mm, then one at 70mm, which is either end of the lens range. Then I changed back to the 18-55mm lens and did the same taking two more pictures.

I printed all five photos onto A4 paper and went back to the same marker point on the ground and held up the pictures.

Picture One (55mm)
To match the first printed image with the gates I had to hold the picture at arms length.

Picture 2  (300mm)
For this picture I needed to be approximately 2 meters from the gate.

Picture 3 (70mm)
For this one I took approximately 10 steps nearer to the gate, from my marker, to replicate the same image.

Picture 4 (55mm)
This is the same as picture one, arms length.

Picture 5 (18mm)
And finally, even holding this picture very close to the eye, it was still smaller than the real gates.

Another lesson learned from this project - keep the camera level to avoid wonky gates !
